Internet Radio On Your PSP

Internet Radio On Your PSP

Sony's PSP portable games console may be floundering in terms of sales, but there are some interesting mods and hacks available out there, one of which turns the device into a WiFi radio.

PSPRadio was one of the first pieces of 'homebrew' software for the PSP and two years later it's still going stong.

For those of you who don't know, there has always been a cat and mouse relationship between Sony and the modding community. Because homebrew software relies on cracking the PSP's firmware (its base operating system) it has always been inextricably linked with the copying of games. As Sony makes all its profit from the sale of games, they have a vested interest in not enouraging the cracking of the OS.

So, every time a crack is released, Sony moves to update the firmware and block the exploit, thus condemning all current mods to the recycle bin. PSPRadio has stayed ahead of the game.

The latest version of PSPRadio  ( 1.18.1365 for those of you who like that kind of thing )  permits the streaming of music from the internet via the PSP's WiFi connection as well as the playing of mp3s stored on the PSP's memory stick.

There is no doubt that you need to know what you are doing in order to get PSPRadio working, but if you own a PSP and you are looking for something new to try, why not give it a go.

The official site for PSPRadio is here.
